After a very emotional day, I’m not sure I have the energy to really sink my teeth into the discussion of why the new episode of Becoming YouTube is troubling to me. As a female videoblogger and filmmaker, I am keenly aware of how this unbalance in the youtube world extrapolates into the world of film; it’s something that I struggle with and will struggle with for the duration of my career. And sometimes the added weight of sexism in your chosen industry is just too much to take when life is already throwing you a few curveballs.

I will say, however, that one of the key problems with the episode to me is that it assumes that YouTube success (ie views, subs etc) is indicative of quality of content. Which I wholeheartedly disagree with. There is plenty of amazing stuff being made that does not garner the same attention as a lot of the YouTubers we see being interviewed on Becoming YouTube. Maybe this is because they defy the format of the traditional “vlog” that we have grown to expect, or because they just haven’t had the good fortune to have the right people find their stuff and have the compassion to share it (I NEVER would have had any subscribers if it wasn’t for Lesliefoundhergrail finding my first video and tweeting about it - thanks gurl). And I would say that a lot of this quality yet seemingly undiscovered stuff is being made by females. Probably over 75% of the content I watch on YouTube is made by females, and a good portion of those creators have proportionately “smaller” viewerships than some of the more well known people. (I use quotations because, um, 10,000 people is A LOT OF PEOPLE.)

But alas, still people can’t seem to find the “elusive female YouTuber”.

Well I found a lot of them and I’d like to share. These are just some of my picks, but I encourage you to check out Becky’s tumblr for a more boss list that she is curating (because she is boss).

EDIT: Just like to re-iterate that this is not a comprehensive list but just the people I have been watching - and that list will surely grow over the next couple days while I check out your recommendations. Also that I am so delighted that our collective frustration has managed to turn into so much wonderful sharing and you guys are all the coolest.
